As many of you know there has been a series of horrible storms which hit the Philippines during the past six weeks. One storm alone flooded 80% of Metro Manila in a matter of hours.

The Philippines Needs Your Help Today

These storms have caused hundreds of deaths, scores injured, displaced over 1,000,000 people, and caused billions of pesos in damage.A large part of the Philippine rice crop has been destroyed. In the aftermath, diseases are now setting in and people are getting sicker by the day. To make matters worse, the typhoon season will not end for another two months.

As other disasters around the world grip the attention of the world, the Philippines is losing much needed attention towards it own serious situation. Unlike other countries that have more financial resources, the Philippines is a poor nation that needs all types and levels of assistance to recover from the disasters that have plagued them.

The easy way to help is to donate money to the Philippine Red Cross. It doesn’t matter how small the donation is; it is important that we all donate.

Please click on the Philippine Red Cross logo to donate:

Philippine Red Cross Logo

We thank you for your kindness.

Please take the few minutes necessary to help by your donation. The Philippines needs you help.

We hope that you and your family will visit Pinoy Lifestyles on a regular basis. Please enjoy the following posting(s):

Yesterday was declared World Day for Water 2009. This kicks off a week of various activities around the world. Let’s take a look at what is World Day for Water.

In 1993 the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 as World Day for Water (also known as World Water Day).

This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Observance began in 1993 and has grown significantly ever since.

The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing United Nations recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries. Each year, one of various UN agencies involved in water issues takes the lead in promoting and coordinating international activities for World Day for Water.

In addition to the UN member states, a number of NGOs promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats have used World Day for Water as a time to focus public attention on the critical water issues of our era. Every three years since 1997, for instance, the World Water Council has drawn thousands to participate in its World Water Forum during the week of World Day for Water.

Participating agencies and NGOs have highlighted issues such as a billion people being without access to safe water for drinking and the role of gender in family access to safe water.
This year on World Water Day 2009 attention is called to the waters that cross borders and link us together.

The world’s 263 trans-boundary lake and river basins include the territory of 145 countries and cover nearly half of the Earth’s land surface. Great reservoirs of freshwater also move silently below our borders in underground aquifers.

With every country seeking to satisfy its water needs from limited water resources, some foresee a future filled with conflict. But history shows that cooperation, not conflict, is the most common response to trans-boundary water management issues.

Over the last 60 years there have been more than 200 international water agreements and only 37 cases of reported violence between states over water. We need to continue to nurture the opportunities for cooperation that trans-boundary water management can provide.

We share the responsibility for managing the world’s trans-boundary waters for current and future generations.

Today, I would like to talk about an important opportunity for all of us to do some real good in the world.

You might have noticed that I added a new clickable logo here at Pinoy Lifestyles. It is called “Plan” and it stands for a great organization that helps millions of children around the world, including in the Philippines.

Founded over 70 years ago, Plan is one of the oldest and largest international development agencies in the world. They work in 49 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Plan directly supports more than 1,500,000 children and their families, and indirectly supports an estimated further 9,000,000 people who live in communities that are working with Plan. They are an independent organization, with no religious, political or governmental affiliations.

Plan’s vision is of a world in which all children realize their full potential in societies that respect people’s rights and dignity. They work to achieve lasting improvements for children living in poverty in developing countries, through a process that unites people across cultures and adds meaning and value to their lives.

Plan works with children, their families, communities, organizations and local governments to implement programs at grassroots level in health, education, water and sanitation, income generation and cross-cultural communication. They ensure that children are involved in all aspects of their programs, working with adults who have learned to value their contribution. They protect and promote children’s rights, helping millions of children to take an active role in their own development.

Plan’s work is made possible by nearly 1,100,000 people in 17 donor countries who support them by sponsoring a child. An average 80% of donations goes directly to support programs benefiting children and families.

Please take some time to see more and how to sponsor a child by clicking here : Plan International
